About

What is a Wild Backyard?

A Wild Backyard is an environment created with the purpose to serve as a sustainable haven for surrounding wildlife. Wildlife gardens contain a variety of habitats that cater to native and local plants, birds, amphibians, reptiles, insects, mammals and so on, and are meant to sustain locally native flora and fauna.

The Summit Metro Parks Wild Back Yards Program encourages the community to work together to help wildlife and counteract the effects of habitat loss and habitat fragmentation. What you do in your yard can help make a big impact!

By participating in the Summit Metro Parks Wild Back Yard program, we adopt as many of their recommendations as we are able and willing.  These practices ensure an environment that is attractive to native wildlife and homeowners alike.

We manage our outdoor space with simple actions that make positive changes.  There are four areas of focus:  Plant native plants; Manage invasive plants; Develop habitat quality; Manage the ecological footprint.
